A quaternary ammonium salt with the chemical formula (C4H9)4NNO3 called tetra butyl ammonium nitrate can be synthesized by the reaction of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide with nitric acid. The resulting product can be purified by a purification process. It is known to be a highly efficient and selective catalyst in several organic transformations. This white crystalline powder that is soluble in water and some organic solvents can be used as a solvent for the dissolution of different polymers, such as cellulose, chitin, and chitosan. It can be used as a phase transfer catalyst, an electrolyte, an additive and an extraction agent.
