Tetramethylammonium bromide (TMAB, Tetramethylammoniumbromide or TMABr) is bromide salt of tetramethylammonium with the chemical formula (CH3)4NBr. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and polar organic solvents. It is used in synthesis of polyamides, dithioacetals, alkyl-substituted pyrroles, organobromine compounds, etc. It is also used as a surfactant in the manufacture of detergents and in electroplating. This quaternary ammonium compound is also a source of bromide ion in organic synthesis reactions due to its solubility and relatively low toxicity compared to other bromide salts.
